Vine-growing has been one of the main occupations of the Romanian people for centuries, but the south-western part of Wallachia had always had something special, as the wines obtained from the grapes harvested here were much appreciated. It was only a matter of time until they were to be discovered and transformed into a symbol of the Romanian wines. In 1884, after King Carol I fell in love with the picturesque image of the amphitheatre-shaped hill on which the vines were planted, he decided to incorporate this land to the Crown’s domains. The wines produced at Segarcea bore the crown of the Romanian wines and accompanied the country’s kings and important figures to all the grandiose diplomatic receptions and banquets of that time.

During those golden years from the beginning of the past century, the secrets of top quality wine-making was hidden inside one of the most beautiful wine cellars and wineries in the country, also known as the Palace of Wine. Richly decorated in royal style, the recently renovated cellar was used for various steps in the long process of transforming grapes into one of Europe’s best wines.
