Caru’ cu Bere is one of the most popular beer houses in Romania and a landmark for Bucharest’s traditional restaurants. Dating from the 19th century, it has evolved into a real touristic attraction, welcoming numerous locals and foreign tourists in search of the authentic Romanian atmosphere.
Once you step inside this traditional venue, you are greeted by waitresses wearing folk costumes and by Moş Ghiţă, the cellar man. You will be impressed by the venue’s special architecture, which includes a fabulous belle époque decor, an arched ceiling, mural paintings and stained glasses, all remindful of the city’s liveliness from the beginnings of the 20th century.
But the restaurant is famous not only for its unique atmosphere and spirit, but also for delicious traditional dishes and for what actually gives its name: an original beer, produced by a secret recipe dating from 1879. If you come here to have lunch, you can choose between several “menus of the day”, named after different guilds: Menu of the Glass Blowers, Menu of the Craftsmen, Menu of the Brewers or Menu of the Hatters. For a little less than 6 €, you can enjoy a hot soup, a main dish with accompanying garnishes and mouth-watering dessert. If you want to enjoy genuine Romanian dishes, you should try some of the house specialties, such as pork shank served with pan fried sour cabbage, polenta, horseradish and chilli pepper, bean ragout served with well smoked grilled sausages or squash stuffed with minced meat served with sour cream. Accompany these dishes with a good wine or with one of the numerous types of beer available in the drinks list, brought from the old wine cellar.
For a complete experience, the guests can enjoy the cultural events held in the restaurant, from violin concertos to folk music and dance performances. Perfect for business lunches and casual or romantic dinners, this venue is also suitable for private events, such as weddings, anniversaries and company parties.
Free wireless is offered throughout the restaurant.
