Jibou Botanical Garden is one of the most important botanical gardens in Romania, housing important domestic and international plants. Situated in the eastern part of Jibou, a town located 25km west of Zalău, “Vasile Fati” Botanical Garden spreads on a surface of more than 24 hectares.

Works for building the garden started in 1959, but it wasn’t until 1970 that the first greenhouse was erected. Later on, in 1982, other greenhouses were built to shelter the tropical, subtropical and Mediterranean collections of plants, as well as the two main greenhouses used nowadays, the aquarium and the volar.

At the moment, the plants in Jibou Botanical Garden are organized in compartments, according to biological reasons, many of these sectors being very popular among tourists. The Ornamental Sector attracts through a baroque park and a Roman garden, as well as through colorful decorative flowers, such as tulips and begonia, trees and scrubs (Ginkgo biloba, giant sequoias and magnolia). The Small and Big Japanese Gardens are oases of calm and peacefulness, being decorated with pine trees, plum trees, bamboo and water lilies. If you are more of a “zoo” person, rather than a “botanical” one, at Jibou Botanical Garden you can also find a Zoological Sector, which includes a Deer Park.

Also the greenhouses have their compartments, where visitors can admire orchids, Mediterranean plants, ferns, cacti and palm trees. The Amazonian Gallery reproduces scenes from the Amazonian forest, with specific fish, birds and plants and luxurious vegetation. Another main attraction point is the Aquarium, which hosts exotic species, such as piranhas, water porcupines, surgeon fish, neon fish, angel fish and clown fish.
